Astronomy Calendar of Celestial Events 2023

Going over 200x magnification will make the viewing experience bad, as the image becomes big and blurry. In fact, atmospheric conditions are responsible for 50% of success for image quality in your eyepiece. So, it is essential to plan your observing session based on that.
At such long focal lengths, the Earth’s rotation quickly moves things out of the field of view, and dedicated planetary imaging cameras have small sensors. Regardless of which telescope you choose, you’re in for an exciting new hobby as a Solar System explorer. Most long-period comets are not particularly spectacular in telescopes or binoculars, but when they are, it can be quite a show. Nowadays, they can also be discovered years before they get close to the Sun, though predictions as to brightness can often be far off and some can be duds, as was the case with Comet Kohoutek in 1974 or Comet ISON in 2012. The brightest “great comets” are visible in broad daylight, and their tails stretch across the sky. C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was the most recent of these, visible to the naked eye even from cities at its brightest and with a visible tail under dark skies.
To really understand these listings, you have to take the time of the rising and setting of the Sun into account for this specific location. We rely on the generous support of donors, sponsors, members, and other benefactors to share the history and impact of aviation and spaceflight, educate the public, and inspire future generations. With your help, we can continue to preserve and safeguard the world’s most comprehensive collection of artifacts representing the great achievements of flight and space exploration. One of the most common questions we get at the Phoebe Waterman Haas Public Observatory is about what kind of telescope to buy, whether for a gift or for personal use. You don’t need extreme levels of magnification, but higher-than-normal capabilities will prove to be useful. But, you may encounter problems like chromatic aberration and image distortion on lower-quality builds.
By default, everyone thinks the telescope is the best way to explore the heavens and it truly is, but the spotting scope presents a great and versatile alternative. We are very fortunate that we have a planet like Saturn in our solar system. If you are not totally amazed by the sight of Saturn in a telescope
to see the rings, than astronomy might not be for you. Binoculars that magnify 10-12X will show the planet as a small slightly non-circular disk
and you might be able to spot its large moon Titan, but that’s about it.
The alternating bands on Jupiter’s outer atmosphere are called Belts (dark bands) and Zones (light bands). Zones represent gas moving upward from the interior, while Belts represent gas falling inward. Jupiter is not our closest neighbour, but because the ratio of its size versus its distance from Earth is greater than that of other Solar System objects, Jupiter will appear larger than any other planet in your telescope.
Perihelion, the closest approach to the Sun, is usually when objects in elliptical orbits are at their brightest if this lines up with opposition, while aphelion is when they are their most distant and thus smallest and dimmest. Such features stand out well through red, orange, or yellow filters. Astronomers routinely follow its phases, along with size changes — a feature easier to spot with Venus than Mercury. While the innermost planet looks twice as big when between Earth and the Sun than it does when it lies on the far side of our star, Venus is more than six times larger. (Be careful never to point your telescope at the Sun.) If you can locate Mercury, use a yellow or orange filter to cut down the sky’s blue light. The larger aperture you use, the more magnification you can achieve.

Celestron’s award-winning Nature DX binocular gets a major upgrade with the addition of ED objective lenses.
So why do we see whole galaxies far-far away, but cannot see the objects on the Moon right next to us? The resolving power of any optical telescope is too small to see such tiny objects, although they are at a much closer distance. Using the same Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope, you will be able to distinguish objects of this size at a maximum distance of 10,000 km.
Larger telescopes may reveal thin extensions of the belts that finger out into the brighter zones. A festoon is like a dark bridge that connects two belts across a zone. Garlands hook out from a belt and may hook far enough to close off into a loop.
